Does this mean I will need to "re-format" (i.e. wipe clean) the internal drive in some way? Never done this before ;-)

As Lili noted it's not a difficult procedure, can be done as part of the install process.

No way, Jose! As someone else noted, OS X needs lots of disk space for swap files and such.

I suggest you install OS X solely in the 9GB HD and leave it there alone. Move 9 and all its contents to the external drive. An anything you install from now on do it in the external drive. I have a beige 333 and that's...

Interesting suggestion, but what *I* would do is simply swap drives. Pull the 160 from the external FW case and move the smaller internal drive into it, to use as a backup drive. After making sure to copy any/all files/apps on the 160 that I can't live without to the now external drive, I'd reformat the larger drive as part of the install process (making sure to install the OS 9 drivers - it's an option you need to look for). The 160 GB drive is almost certainly faster than your stock drive (probably 7200 RPM), and it's large enough to easily create separate partitions for OS X and OS 9/Classic. Again, that's just what I would do if my situation were as you describe...

Just a thought.
