My brother is a PC user who just acquired a used beige G3 from his sister in law. He has never used macs and has no clue how to work with them. This is his question:
"Do you know how to get the mac 9.1 os to connect to windows/linux shared drives? I tried browsing the network on it but nothing shows... I know it's properly connected since it's getting internet access and i was able to assign it an ip address."
9.1 requires a program like DAVE to provide SMB browsing and connections. For the Linux systems he can install netatalk, but if he gets DAVE it will solve the problem entirely.
<http://www.thursby.com/products/dave.html> Pricey, but it's the only game in town. There's a free trial version.
Now, if he upgrades that beige a bit, he can run OS X on it which will connect natively.
