This particular system is a Rev 1, 300MHz, with a 20GB (upgraded) hard drive, 256MB (64+64+128) RAM. The Firmware had already been updated to the latest (G3 firmware 1.1). It did have a SCSI card in a PCI slot, but I removed that.
The RAM was in slots 1 (64), 2 (64), and 4 (128), so I moved it to 1 (64), 2 (64), and 3 (128).
OS X Server complains about a RAM issue.
OS X just won't install - crashes during installation
OS 9 installs either lock up midway, or they complain about "You need OS 8.5 to install (this)" or "You need OS 8.1 to install (that)." Um, I'm installing OS 9!! What the heck?
Because of this last problem, I have been doing custom OS 9 installs, installing ONLY Mac OS System and Internet apps. As a last ditch effort I am trying to install JUST the Mac OS System, recommended installation. NOTHING extra for this install.
The OS 9 installs just lock up with "About x minutes" remaining, typically around 6-7 minutes remaining. By lockup I mean the mouse is unresponsive and my USB keyboard's caps lock light doesn't light.
Sounds like RAM or hard drive problems.
I have tried each stick of RAM individually (in slot 1) and still no luck installing even OS 9.
That would seem to rule out RAM issues unless alll sticks are bad (unlikely).
Oh, I have partitioned several times, and the most recent partition scheme is 3 partitions. (This is to be a play machine and I want to multi-boot BeOS, Mac OS 9, Mac OS X, Mac OS X Server, and YDL if that's possible. I am willing to go to 1 partition for the moment, if someone thinks that might help. Well, I might as well just try that anyway - my last install just locked up.)
Any idea what's up with this machine and how I can fix it?
Well, since you wouldn't be able to boot from an external firewire drive anyway, I would try a different internal drive or an external SCSI drive. You're going to want more than 20G before long in any case.
The internal IDE controller can only take one hard drive, not a master and slave as is the normal case. Check the jumpers on the internal drive to be sure it is configured correctly.
Good luck, Dan
