I've been toying with the idea of streaming some MP3's to the net, has
anyone on the list experimented with this procedure? In my googling
for info, it seems that Mac's are not highly thought of in this
category. Seems to me a computer is a computer and why one would be
favored over another for any particular application is a mystery to me.
Or does it perhaps have more to do with the software aspects?

If you're just going to stream some of your own audio, then Quick Time Streaming Server can be used to embed mp3's on a web page.

If you want to broadcast from your own server, then something like Nicecast from Rogue Ameba Software is a good solution. It's not very expensive.

Caveat. Be very careful with this, amigo. If you're playing independent artists, that don't have the time and money to fight for what rightfully is theirs, then, you'll probably be alright. I guess, let your conscience be your guide.

If you're streaming music by someone that is "owned" by a major record label, you might have a problem. The record companies are going to want their royalties when the song is played.

There are solutions to this, like Live-365. They'll handle up on the royalty issues for you, but it does cost, depending on the audience you want to reach.
