Quite often, there's a large gap between connotation and denotation. I know
that Grundig (shortwave radio manufacturer) will offer refurb'd units quite
frequently. These radios are often received as gifts by people who don't
know (and don't want to know...) the first thing about shortwave and are
returned to shops after pretty much just being opened and looked at.
There's nothing wrong functionally with these units, just minor cosmetic
dings. Grundig tests them, repackages them with new accessories, and sells
them. People who *do* know about radios can get a killer deal.
And of course, with No Good Deed Going Unpunished, a lot of people see that
and think the radios are somehow defective because of all the refurb'd units
on offer. You'd like to think that people would examine this sort of thing
more critically, but they don't.
It wouldn't surprise me if people were to buy the mini ("look, shiny!") and
then decide it wasn't quite what they wanted. I don't know what Apple's
return policy is on a new box, though, and I would hate to find out
firsthand. That "six dead pixels is okay" policy they apparently have (?)
makes my butt twitch, especially at those prices.
