What kind of cable are you using with the HD? If you are using a plain standard IDE cable, these don't work well with the ultra IDE ports. Try a proper cable before you condemn the port.

I don't know my cables very well, but it has a blue connector on one end of it. The cable was in backwards - that is, the motherboard connector was on the HD, and the secondary HD connector was on the motherboard. I reversed the cable and now I get an "illegal instruction" bomb on bootup.
This is very curious. :)
