You might be interested to learn that the problem with my B&W G3 was indeed the hard drive. Not that the drive is bad, but that my rev 1 B&W just won't accept it. It is a Seagate Barracuda ATA IV, model ST320011A.
I swapped it for a 20GB drive from my beige g3 and that booted just fine.
Glad that ordeal is over...
