OK guys, I am probably not the brightest bulb in the box on this subject. I looked at Yellow Dog, RedHat, Fedora, FreeBSD, and DragonFly. I still don't know which one would be a good place for a young man to get his feet wet, so to speak.
Which one would be a good starting point for a newbie? Maybe one with lots of online FAQs and such.
Darwin is the base for OS X, so getting used to that will provide him with more power when using OS X.
Abstracting a bit, Darwin pulls alot of it's userland from FreeBSD. FreeBSD is well documented, and very capible. Getting used to FreeBSD will allow him to jump on just about any BSD, including OS X and be right at home. It'll also give him a leg up on all those people who foolishly think Linux based distributions are the backbone of the net... : )
If he wants to try a linux distro, I suggest Debian or Suse. Both are well documented, and well put together.
Mandrake will provide a quick 'OS X' like out of the box experience, full gui control, a small boat load of apps installed, etc. It has the same short comings of many other Linux distros however in it's a hodgepodge mess under the hood. The directory structure is spaghetti, apps are splatterd across it with abandon. I'd avoid it if you want to do more than just poke at it for 5 seconds.
