A relative has asked me what Mac hardware he'd need to get into video editing. He likes the video DVDs I've been making and wants to try it himself, but he doesn't want to spring for a new G5, so we'll go looking around at used G4s. I told him I'd help him get set up.
My own Mac is a G4 733 stuffed full of big hard drives and 1.5 gigs of RAM, and it does pretty good at editing video. However, the latest version of Final Cut Express requires a faster machine, at least 1GHz, to do HD video, as well as at least 1 gig of RAM, and we might as well adopt that as our standard. And we'll need a superdrive to burn DVDs, as well as interior space to add one or more big hard drives. All this seems to indicate a tower.
I would hope that we could buy somewhere a used or refurbed G4 tower that has as much of this stuff as possible already in it, although we'll probably have to modify any G4 we get to some extent, such as upping the RAM and adding drives.
So, can anyone advise us which models of the G4's came stock with a 1GHz processor, and also a superdrive? Are there any good resellers with refurbed G-4s or who can build one up to specs and offer it with a warranty? How can we get the most for our money while meeting our requirements for video editing?
Any advice appreciated.
Tom
