I have a simple setup OS X.3):
ADS modem ! D-link router ! ! Mac 1 Mac 2
And they've been working fine until recently when one of the Macs has lost contact with the Internet.
When I check the Network settings, the working Mac has IP 213.66.212.57 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0
but the other one as a self assigned 169.254.244.32 and more pussling, the subnet mask 255.255.0.0
I have actually had exactly the same problem with a friend's iMacs and OS 9.2, but I put that down to a crap cable, though it was never verified.
Here I have tried two different cables and restarted, and tried different ports on the router.
It did work fine until it just suddenly gave up... ?!
I presume the subnet mask has something to do with it (I really must do an IP basics course!!)
Any help would be much apreciated.

Could be a problem with the DSL service. I've seen similar behavior with networked Macs once in awhile. I expect the IP on the working Mac is the correct one, that your router should be using for itself. The router then gives each other host a local IP address via DHCP. Through the magic of NAT, the router shares one IP address among all the local machines.
If you haven't done this yet, try: 1) turn off DSL modem 2) turn off router 3) wait 10 min or so 4) turn on DSL modem 5) wait for all the lights to settle into their normal state (1-2 min for mine) 6) turn on the router
That has always fixed it for me. It shouldn't be necessary to restart the Macs. Check their IP addresses, and click for a new DHCP lease, if needed.
You can also point your browser at the router and see what IP addresses it uses for the NAT mapping.
