...And you can get them much cheaper elsewhere, online. Do a search. Search 1/2 AA lithium PRAM (make sure it's 3.6 V).
There are a multitude of other possibilities, like the ATTO card firmware version, it's seating in the PCI slot or your SCSI cable connection. (If the cable or card gets bumped or moved). Otherwise the randomness does sort of sound PRAM-ish.

(I also had to remove my USB 2.0 card then install my ATTO UL2D (firmware 1.5 recommended, no higher on this card), boot once then shut down, then go back and put in my USB card and things are OK.
Also, on this particular card version that has only one internal 68 pin (bus 2) and one external VHDCI (mini 68 connector, bus 1) I have to use the external connector to boot. The G3 does not want to boot from the internal (bus2) SCSI. It is a ridiculous Apple OEM version of the card that does not have connectors in place for the internal (bus 1) and external (bus 2). But it was cheap! I just use a female to female 68 pin adapter to connect the external connector and cable to an internal SCSI drive.
