Well, since this is for your kid, I am assuming that you are going to be using a crt. So how about using industrial grade velcro and attaching it to the side of the monitor? They have velcro that is difficult for an adult to remove for just this type of application. This is what I am thinking of, attaching one to the side or top of a 21" trinitron.
If you are going to be using a lcd (lucky kid), you could always attach it to the back and make your own low budget flat panel iMac.
