The FireWire cards on the B&W G3 are notoriously bad so if you have FireWire problems, a new card will help that.

Uh ?!

never heard anything and I'm thinking of using a B&W G3 as
I am planning to move from my MDD to the B&W with ATA card.

Could you explain ?

Larry

If you search the Mac discussion boards on FireWire in a rev. 1 B&W G3, you will find at last count 160 messages on bad OEM FireWire in the early G3.

I can attest that this occurs in the newer rev's of B&W's as well. I was experiencing horrible transfer rates (multiple hours for less than 20MB) and often failed transfers altogether. A visit to my local shop and $12 later I had 5 more f/w ports that worked flawlessly. I'm pretty sure mine is the latest revision of the B&W, as I had the newer IDE controller chips, updated video card, and have had as many as 4 drives installed without issue.

I can't tell you how many times the onboard f/w ports caused me to reformat my iPod due to corrupt transfers...now things work all the time with expected f/w speeds :)
