It looks like the USB 2 cards that work best with OS X are all NEC chip
based. I have a Lacie 5 port USB 2 card with the NEC chip. That isn't
to say that even these are fault free. If I hook a combo USB 2
hub/multi-card reader up to it my computer will crash at sleep
requiring a forced reboot. I've tried two different brands with the
same result. As such I've ended up plugging it into one of the built-in
USB 1.1 ports. Sigh. But it does work very well with my USB 2 scanner
(Canon 8400f) and various USB 1.1. devices. No sleep/crashing problems
with other devices I've tried. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the
sleep problems with certain devices with these cards is a problem with
OS X and not the hardware, but I can't say that my hopes are high for a
software-only fix. I tend to suspect it is a flaw in the design of the
PCI hardware and thus will never be fixed. In general I've been less
than impressed with PCI on the Mac (which isn't to say it is worse than
Windows, I simply don't have any experience with it on Windows.)
