Ive been wondering how to set up a beige to run OS X. Just wondering what the basic requirements are to run well. It seems a lot of you are happy with the G3 processor. Any speed requirement? Does OS X run alright on Beiges with an 83MHz bus? I understand that most people like to have around 512MB, but has anyone tried 320, 384, or 448? Lastly, which video card is OK. Would a Rage 128 do the trick?
Personally, I consider a 350 MHz G3 w/1 MB cache the absolute minimum for acceptable performance in OS X. and prefer at least 400. I've configged a number of Gossamer G3's for X and found that some don't like it when you try to change the system bus speed. I currently have two AIO's happily running on 83 MHz bus, though - one of them with Panther 10.3.8. As for how much RAM is needed, the AIO ran OK w/384 but is much happier since I bumped it to 640. I'm learning that just about any ATI card will work fine - I currently have a 8 MB Xclaim driving a second monitor in my AIO (and another driving the main monitor on my PCC PowerCenter with XLR8 Carrier).
Peace, Gene
