If I understand your question correctly (will G3 iMac and/or B&W G3 be significantly faster than Beige G3?) then the answer is most definitely.

If you're looking at G3 iMacs I'd go for the 500 MHz+ models (probably graphite or snow colors) w/16 MB VRAM. These are much nimbler in OS X than you'd expect, and you should be able to find one on fleabay that's decently configged for $300 or less. Any version with a slot-loading CD-ROM will be a significant improvement over your Beige.

A nice B&W G3 can be had for even less, and has the advantage of expandability/upgradability. It's the first model with New World ROMs, onboard USB and FireWire, so it's guaranteed compatible with any current version of OS X. It's the last version with ADB, so you can keep your favorite keyboard and mouse. Try to find a Rev 2 if at all possible. Initial CPU speed isn't very important since installing a faster ZIF is so easy, so you can "settle" for a 350 MHz model for well under $200. There are a lot of reasons why it's still a Low End Mac "Best Buy" over six years after it's initial release: http://lowendmac.com/best/blue-g3.html
I'm a tightwad on a fixed income, and the B&W is my personal choice to tide me over until I can scrape together enough $ to get a mini.

>> Then going for a G4 unit is overkill for your needs. If you have $500-600 to spend, by all means get a mini >> - you'll love all the uses you discover for it. But if you're budget-conscious you can get a nicely configged >> G3 iMac, or even a Blue & White, for under $200. Either one would be a vast improvement over a Beige G3 >> and will run OS X quite capably, and with none of the headaches inherent to running X on Old World >> architecture. They may stil be "just a G3" but practically speaking the difference is like night and day.

Peace, Gene
