Diminished sound

Today my QS 800 running 10.3.8 started to lower the volume of the music 
played through the speakers (internal and or externals), to about half 
of the volume that it had been playing before.
But.. when I accessed a site on the net that had sound pipped through, 
the volume was high.
The sound control in the system preferences shows that it is at the max.

What can be causing this? and any tips top restore the volume?
