I've been away from the computers for a few days and finally got around to trying your advice this evening. It didn't go so well. Not only did it not fix the IDE channel, my beige G3 refused to boot any HD for a short time. Was only able to boot from the 9.2 CD. Finally got it booting again into 9.2.2 on my IDE HD, but could not get it to boot from the SCSI into OSX at all for the longest time. Finally booted into 9.2.2 and ran xpostfacto again. Used the option to boot into OSX from there and now I have the machine running 10.3.8 once again. I'm just gonna let it run over night and check to see how it is working in the morning.

Ouch that shouldn't happen. I think that zapping the PRAM in combination with xpostfacto on your Mac is the reason why it didn't work. I can imagine the shock you had when it didn't boot at all :| Luckily you fixed it by running xpostfacto again.
Only thing I can think of is asking if you're using the latest version of xpostfacto for 10.3.8?

I have to agree that it should not happen, but it did. I've been fooling with these infernal contraptions long enough to know that most anything you do to them is fixable, some easier than others, so I was not too worried about it. One thing I did notice is that my PRAM battery may be dead or dying, might that cause such a problem?

On a related note, I just won an auction for a G4 450 Mhz CPU/zif on Ebay, so when it arrives I will be using the 400 Mhz processor in this computer in the beige, which should speed it up a bit. It's really not that bad running at 266 Mhz, but every little bit helps!

Congratulations, that should speed it up :)

I hope so too! BTW, has anyone else on the list used one of the upgrade processors from fastmacs (http://www.fastmac.com/products/processors/zifs.php)? I bought mine off Ebay for $135 including shipping, so that was a pretty good savings compared to the $159 retail price.
