One thing to try is to raise the unit up 1-2cm off the desk with sticks or such. The idea is to expose the bottom to air as much as possible. While presumably no air flow is intended here, giving it that space will increase cooling through the bottom.

I would say that 5 mm is enough, use four small erasors.

Really handy with a stationary PowerBook G4...
