I just thought I would share a fun story with the group. I run a Public Affairs shop for the Coast Guard in Seattle. We had a custom duel PIII machine that was made by some folks called DVgear. It was running Windows2000 workstation and had a Ratoc real time editing card in it. Well the thing only had a 350 watt power supply which wasn't enough to feed the six hard drives, two cd drives and enormous pci cards that were in it. It finally gave up the ghost. We attempted cpr by buying new hard drives, three of the hard drives were damaged permanently by a brown out, replacing the power supply, bios battery, drive controller card. It was built in 1999 to the tune of about $15K. We were in a real bind - our budget wouldn't allow us to buy a new machine until next year and we needed a stand alone machine to make videos and edit our photos. Well I went routing through our closet and found a Powermac G3 400 BW. I dusted it off, took the ram and new hard drives that were in the pc into the apple, held my breath, plugged it in and then..... bong! It fired right up! The thing had been sitting on the shelf for at least two years and was nearly as old as the PC. It still works as well as the day it was built. I brought in a copy of Panther that I wasn't using at home and installed it on the machine. It has been running problem three for three weeks now. We have edited video and digital pictures. Before Ill I would hear is hey Chief the computer is broken we can't work. Now they don't have any excuses not too. Anyway I have been a convert for about three years now but I really am impressed with the longevity of the hardware. PC's just don't last that long. Oh just out of curiosity the B&W custom configuration that we bought cost about $4000 dollars in 1999.
