I've had a G3/266 on the floor of my computer room ever since my ex-wife stopped using it. I have tentative plans to write some software that will be somewhat OS portable.

I just recently got a G3/266 myself. I've overclocked it to 333 MHz, and it's very stable. You can find instructions on overclocking here:

(1) I've looked on the list archive, but I can find little help about what OS X version I can run on this Mac. Is there a web page or an email thread somewhere that explains my options?

Apple only supports 10.2.8, but you can install the latest version of X, 10.3.something using XPostFacto:

(2) Does OS X come with C and C++ compilers? Assembler?

Don't know about that one.

(3) Prices for either of the above?

OWC's specials page has 10.2 for about $25 and 10.3 (on DVD) for about $50:

The same page has 256 MB memory modules for your G3 for $25 each, so that's $75 to max out the RAM, assuming you don't have any 256ers in there already.
