Boy, could I use some help! I'm about to give up on my PCI hybrid Mac. It's had an xlr8 G3 carrier card on it for two years now, and it's been running fine. Until about two weeks ago, when it started to get flaky. I've done a lot of testing and changing, and tonight all the hard drives are going through DiskWarrior...
I've pulled the G3 card out, wondering if that were it. I had installed MaxPowR 2.0.5, and put in a NewerTech MaxPowR G3 card (also 300MHz), but the system woulc bomb so fast the warning message didn't fully load on screen. I pulled it out and am now running, slightly more stably, a 200MHz 603e daughter card. Everything's slow to load. The Mac - an 8500 mobo in a 7200 case - is running two SCSI hard drives. I've taken out the fast SCSI card and drive - last week. That apparently wasn't the problem. I actually switched nearly identical Macs after the trouble started. I combined the memory from two different Macs - it's now 704MB (2x128, 2x32, 2x128, 2x64) and put all but thr fast SCSI card onto this new (old) hybrid. I have an ixMicro video card, and a FireWire/USB card in the PCI slots. Original CD and floppy. I'm running OS 9.1. Today I removed the Wacom ADB tablet, just to see if that caused the problems. Nope. I still have problems. The Mac often freezes; has trouble at startup, often freezing; the Finder often quits; so: now, questions. 1. What version of MaxPowR software should I use for a PCI Mac and a NewerTEch G3 card? (Since I also have a NuBus card in the 2x0 range, what version should I use for that?) The Otherworld Computing site had many different versions for download, but little or no instructions (despite a FAQ). 2. How does one test memory? Let's say that one of my memory sticks is going bad. How would I find out? 3. How does one work that memory control panel, again? I remember pressing a button on launching panel, and getting a special, hidden page to show up in the control panel. How does one do this again? 4. Using DiskWarrior is a good tool for hard drives, no? Any other tools that you might recommend? I have a disk of Norton 6.0.1 around here somewhere? Anything on that worth recommending? 5. I've zapped PRAM so many times my hands are developing carpal tunel. Is it possible that the PRAM battery needs replacing? (I've actually tired several around here?) I know that my 7100 used to lose video if the PRAM went. What happens to a 7600/8500 when that battery goes? 6. The problem is apparently NOT the xlr8 G3 card. So if I solve the problem, I'll probably put it back in. My question is: what are the best switch settings for the carrier card? I'd like to replace the 300MHz zif with a 450MHz zif. Does the zif itself contain some jumpers I need to worry about? Have you exchanged zifs on a xlr8 carrier card? Enough questions for now. Though I probably have more. After several years running this Mac, without many problems, the repeated crashes and freezes are getting me down! t P.S. I do have a Molar here that I could use to take up slack - indeed, it's been a lifesaver. But so far I've not got the fast scsi card to work on it, and, well, it's a little limiting a computer. But I may switch over soon, if this PCI hybrid doesn't get fixed. -- Signwave Finder Mail 0.5a - http://www.signwave.co.uk/ -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
