Rob Pegoraro wrote a timely article in The Washington Post, Sunday, February 27, 2005, titled: "Creaky Operating Systems Show Their Age." He goes back to Mac OS 8 and Windows 95. (Heh, heh, I've been spending so much time at the screen, that I did not read that newspaper section until yesterday.)

QUOTE:
The research firm IDC estimates that of the roughly 514 million paid-for copies of Windows on desktops and laptops worldwide at the end of 2004, almost 21 percent were the aging Win 95, 98 and Millennium Edition releases. Among the 19 million Mac OS desktop and laptop installations IDC surveyed, just about half were running releases predating Mac OS X. END QUOTE

The entire article is interesting reading. It should be there for free viewing for another six days.

As for what you mention below, 'non-power Mac users....', I think they're
probably few in number and when actually faced with the NEED to upgrade,
they'll be pleasantly surprised at how prices have come down when they do go
to upgrade and if they can't 'c'est la vie'.

And what about all those non-power Mac users who do not even know about
e-lists like this, don't know about lowendmac, don't know anything
about their old Macs except how to USE them? What about them when
their old Macs die and they must now buy a Mini or an eMac or an iMac
or an iBook at least possible expense?
