Look people, it's this simple: OS X is an operating system that is an

This, for me and I suspect many others is the crux of the issue.

Complexity is a great help when one can use it. It is a great hindrance when you don't need it.
For me that sentence puts the finger directly on the issue.
I am older, not particularly a computer geek. My uses are primarily email, web surfing, with a little Quicken thrown in cause its easier than writing and doing a check book manually.

OS X is a great operating system. Its powerful, stable, and complex.
Its also a heck of a lot more system than I need for my uses. At the rate I use it and learn it'll be another 5-6 years before I am comfortable in and confident in my knowledge and ability to use OS X, not to mention the hours of frustration trying to figure out what I did wrong while digging through some thick manual.

I installed OS X 10.2x on my wife's beige "G4" which she inherited from me. It's been running for months with no care whatsoever. All she does is email and web surf, and that only rarely. If you only have simple needs, then why sweat the details? Install X and run it. Don't mess with it. Heck, don't even worry about any upgrades. It doesn't get any simpler than that.
I don't see any hindrance to OS X. It honestly sounds like you might just be a little afraid of the unknown. I was, too, and didn't move to X until it had been out over two years. I wouldn't even think about going back to 9. X is sweeeet! Much, much more stable than 9, too.
