So, I put the geezer survey to you all: which of the newer (meaning OS X-

Hmmm..."best" can be so subjective. If you're looking for "bang for the buck" I'd recommend a Digital Audio G4. The first G4s with 133 MHz bus, and the only ones with four PCI slots. You may be able to find one on ebay for as little as ~$400. If you think you'll wanna upgrade the processor at some future date, go for the 466 or 533 MHz models - you might even consider the 533 Dual Processor. If you don't care to think about processor upgrades, the 667 or 733 MHz models are solid performers if within your budget.

I've got the 733 model, bought new in 2001, and it is indeed a solid performer. I can boot back easily into OS 9 to use a few applications that I haven't yet upgraded to X. I put three big hard drives inside this tower and also run a chain of three more big FireWire drives off one of the two FireWire ports. Maxed out at 1.5 gigs of RAM, it is a great video editor with Final Cut Express. I replaced the original CD drive with a Pioneer 107 superdrive and burn DVDs with it now as well. A very capable Mac.
