Another, lesser possibility is that the folder was made invisible to the finder. Open the desktop folder in your user folder and then use the Invisibles app or some similar app to make invisible items visible.
You can also search for invisible items within finder by adding a "visibility" criteria to the name criteria within search--use the + symbol to add search criteria.
