Hmmmm, well --
I've done the experiments suggested by Mike, and the results are in.
1. PRAM zapping (yes, all three chimes): Restarted on Nucleolus (the SCSI HD). Bad!!
2. Open Firmware
(A) Typing 'boot' -- (note: typing 'mac-boot' made it say "unknown word.") -- Restarted instantly on Nucleolus. Wrong disk. Bad!!
Yeah, I meant for you to just see that as a reference and not type that. But now you know what happens when you type something OF doesn't recognize. Or get back to continue normal boot.
(B) Typing 'init-vram' -- it said OK, I typed 'reset-all,' and the G3 once again proceeded to boot up with Nucleolus. Bad!!
Well, at least you know it isn't a firmware corruption problem, something the Beige Rev A ROMs are known to get from time to time. Beige machines OF uses 'init-nvram' while some others use reset-vnram. WAIT A SECOND! Did you type 'init-vram' like you say above or 'init-nvram' as I suggested? It makes a difference if you want to reset firmware in case there is corruption.
The good news, I guess, is that my boyfriend was able to talk me through the "how to open the computer" operation on the phone, so I can check the connections on the IDE drive (and try Bruce's idea of jumper to "nothing" as compared to "master"). On that note, Bruce, I know it's on the bus by itself, it has to be, doesn't it? A Rev 1 G3 Beige can only take one device per bus, isn't that right? Well, the CD-ROM is on one bus, and the new HD is on the other.
Also, I found out where the CUDA button is. Question: for how long should I hold it down?
10- 15 seconds should do it. Many people suggest doing it with the computer off. Apple doesn't say how to do it except to take it to a certified Apple technician to push that button. Yeah, right!
Before you go any further, does the drive (named XXX) mount and show up on the desktop? If not I'd suspect a connection or jumper setting issue as Bruce suggested. Forget the rest of the suggestions until that is checked out if there is no mounted drive visible.
Mike
