If you're using your normal OS 9 extension load, that's a likely thing. you can tell classic to boot to extension manager and you can select Apple standard as the extension set.


I ended up with my OS 9 system on a separate disk and a minimal install of OS 9 on my OS X disk for Classic stuff. Works like a charm.
