A couple of weeks ago my 20GB 2 month old iPod showed me a file with an exclamation mark and promptly erased all 3,000 I had songs on it. I plugged it back in to the firewire cable in the B&W and iTunes saw it, and dumped all the files back on to it. Back to normal.

Oddly enough I have a B&W and had similar issues with my 4th Gen 20gig model. I think dropping it into a puddle on concrete from about waist high could have contributed to it.

However, iPods have quirky battery issues at times. I've had small issues (as well as read about them doing research) that were usually fixed by draining, charging, updating software, then loading it down with music.

Make sure you're running the newest iPod software. The updaters are available via Apple's iPod Download site. Not that it matters at this point, but it will wipe the contents of your pod and place you back to the factory default screen you're seeing now.
