I think these are used in PC's mostly. There are standard floppy or CDRW sized "modules" that usually have a set of Firewire, USB, memory card slots, temperature, etc. ports and come with cables. You pop these modules into a standard PC where your floppy was or into an open bay and this large array of ports are available on the front of the PC rather than on the back where the PCI slots are. I imagine these also work in some Mac's, although I've not heard of that usage so much.

Gee-3 makes the Sweet Multiport, which is a version of this for G4 macs.

The PC versions should work just fine on macs, but modding them into the mac's case design is the main stumbling block. <http://tekgems.com/Products/MJ-USB-11-INHB.htm?frg> This one explicitly states that it's compatible with the Mac.

On my Beige, I just snaked a firewire cable through the opening to the (removed because it doesn't work in OS X) floppy drive to the internal port on my Firewire card. Made connecting the video camera a *lot* simpler.

Looked rather odd, though.
