Thanks Amanda (and everybody else who's offered suggestions) -- yesterday I
tried every possible jumper setting (there were no instructions on the
burner itself), zapped the PRAM, checked for supposedly necessary files.
Result: nothing. So I put the old CDROM back it, and it works fine, just as
before.
