It's a good upgrade for someone coming off of a iMac. I'd recommend a decent LCD, just make sure it's a DVI for best performance. There have been reported brightness issues with VGA monitors (though iirc, these are mostly older CRTs, not LCDs)

I've tried several old CRTs with my Mini. With most I've found that I can get a decent picture by calibrating the color using the Color tab in the Display section of System Preferences.
