Let him remove the battery first, then reset the PMU and re-insert the battery: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449#faq4 Then try letting him reset the Mac while he's in Open Firmware. (Or if the Mac doesn't go into OF by itself let him boot while holding down the keys COMMAND-OPTION-O-F simultaneously).
