Here's an idea for storage that works for Mac OS 8.6 upwards On this page (http://www.peripheralsplus.net.au/oop.asp) is listed a USB2.0 to IDE ATA/ATAPI connector to run an IDE HDD, or other ATAPI device from a USB outlet.
