Yes of course they want us to constantly buy new Macs. But it still seems the kind of myopic decision only marketing people can throw up. They underestimate the huge (and real) PR-effect that Macs have a longer life as useful machines than Windoze-boxes. Elderly Macs spread the knowledge of Macs' superiority to a wider audience, who when they finally buy a new computer will definitely get a Mac. As evidenced by all the people on this list thinking of getting at least a Mac Mini when outgrowing their upgraded old ones. Freely available service manuals would give Apple a big, very cheap marketing effect.
