It is running Panther but I followed your instructions, played around a 
little in areas I had been before and I think it is fixed. Life is good 
once again...

Hi Vic -- you don't say what OS you're using, but in 9xxx go to the the
Keyboard Control Panel and make sure that the "US" layout is selected, 
as at
present it is virtually certain NOT to be. There's sure to be an 
equivalent
fix in the OSX system preferences.
