Can you start AppleWorks and open them from inside the program?
Alternatively, control-click on one f the files and select Open With; you should have an 'Other' option, select it and choose AppleWorks. Click the button for 'all files of this type' and you will solve your problem.
In general, anywhere you can save a file in OS X you can open it just fine.
