I Take it that none of the macs have airport?

If you are using the ethernet ports to connect to the router then that's it basically!. Simply because the ethernet port is looking for the router to supply it with internet use. When you check the apple-talk control panel and set it to ethernet does it let you or does it say the port is in use.?

what type of macs are they. ?

Reason for asking is I connect my ibook to my 3400 via airport all the time not a problem but when i had them all connected to a wired router (before i got wireless) i had to disconnect from the router and use a cross over cable, (thats why i went wireless plus it is easier than laying cables)
