The tendency is to suspect the serial/USB adapter. However, the
instructions for its use were Palm specific and provided an option for
installing either in OS 9.9.2 or OS-X (utilized) and the driver installation
itself was straight-forward.
Would be grateful for any/all help with this.
I know nothing about IOGear adapters, but I have used a presumably similar Keyspan USB-to-Serial adapter for Hotsync between a Server G4 running OS 10.3.8 and two old Palms (IIIxe and VIIx). In order for the cross syncing to work, the simulated "serial port" has to be configured exactly in accordance with the following Keyspan instructions:

If IOGear does not provide similar instructions, you may wish to take a look at the Keyspan document.
