Larry,
Check Apple site for "Power Macintosh G3 CD Update
2.0" - wierdly enough, the CD firmware is supposed to
affect sleep behavior, and if it's this, the 2.0
update cures it. The B&W firmware version should be
no older than 1.1 and they've got that too.
Is Remote Access software involved or present?
That's been known to affect wakeup stuff.
I found a mention that early OSX versions had this
problem with Classic waking up properly, or more
particularly running badly/unreliably when it did,
which was fixed by the time Jaguar came along. So
maybe it's really an OS9 problem that using the
current OSX envelope can work around? Something to
consider.
I've had wakeup problems that responded to yanking
the battery, resetting the firmware on startup, etc.
Also to swapping RAM out (various SysAdmins say
there's a bad RAM epidemic these days) and/or cleaning
the contacts with a pencil eraser. YMMV.
And Oyeah, just to confuse the issue, consider
whether she might have a hard drive going bad and
having trouble spinning up to full speed. I've had
that and TechTool thought it was fine because when
tested, THEN it was already running. I'm thinking
shutdown and restart gives more of a kick to get the
HD going than the soft restart from sleep... maybe
somebody knows this for sure? Anyway, in a
problematic B&W I was in recently, a new HD spins up
immediately and it has chimes every time! Now that I
think about it, She should be backing her data up to a
RW CD or something FREQuently at least till this is
resolved, in case it is the HD. MAJOR possibility.
Happy hunting!
Jim
