Thanks for the ideas Wayne. I tried dropping the doc on the TextEdit icon in the dock and the result was the same: a box popped up with a message saying "TextEdit Open Failed." Other TextEdit files open fine this way, but not these two busted ones.

I tried Word 98 (in Classic mode), which can open .rtf files, and it did open the docs, but the pages came up empty, not even any garbage. Get Info shows the bigger doc at 32 kb, so there should be something in it, but it doesn't show any content.

I downloaded a copy of Smultron and tried opening the doc, but once again it showed an empty page.

So, I guess the data is lost. This really shakes my faith in TextEdit as a safe place to store info, if it can just suddenly get corrupted like this for no apparent reason.

Thanks again,

Tom

Tom,
Have you tried dragging them onto the textedit icon in the dock while the app is open?
If that does not work, you can probably open them in Smultron or some other wp, then cut and paste into a new textedit doc. Then save the new doc, quit textedit, and double click the new app to see if it launches textedit.

Hi all,

Anybody else had TextEdit files that suddenly refuse to open? I've been keeping a list of tips for using Final Cut in one, adding information to it as I learn the program, and suddenly today when I try to open this doc, it won't open. Instead, a box pops up that says "TextEdit Open Failed."
