Wayne, yes it is normal. Macs don't usually have VGA monitor ports on them. You can probably locate a Mac-VGA adapter plug that will convert the Mac video signal into something that the VGA monitor can read. Otherwise, find yourself a video card like the iX3D Twin-Turbo card made by iXMicro. Will be an eBay item most likely.

Make sure you get one with a little bank of DIP switches on it. It will fool the Mac into thinking the monitor you're using has the sense wires which it uses to detect what monitor is connected (and thus what resolutions it supports). Sound complicated, easy in practise. Good luck!
