Better safe than sorry - it's probably worth sticking your firewall 
on. OSX comes with a very decent and powerful firewall, but your 
options for configuring it from the GUI are quite limited. Have a 
google on 'osx firewall' - you'll turn up a lot of very useful and 
indepth information.

I always buy a DSL router/firewall combo when I get a DSL or other 
'always on' connection.  Something with NAT translation.  This will 
hide your internal ip address from the rest of the world and give you 
an extra layer of protection.

You can get these for under $75.  I just bought a new one from Zoom 
(X5) that is a dsl modem/firewall/router/4 ethernet port hub/1 USB port 
(5th network port) for $69 from CompuUSA.  They also have a model that 
is $99 I believe, that also has VoIP, but that model gets rid of the 
bridging features in order to have that VoIP (voice over IP (internet 
telephone calls)) functionality and I needed the bridging more.

This means anyone from outside will run into the router/firewall first 
and have to get through that to find your computer(s) behind it.  It 
also will allow you to run up to 5 computers (for this Zoom router, 
others vary if they include a hub) on your DSL, sharing the connection 
with others in your home.
