Marcus Chang <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> has "G3 or G4" questions:
Thanks to everyone for your comments on the Powerlogix upgrades. ....For instance, I don't know what "cache" is or what it does. ---------- You don't really need to know to be productive.
Background: I'm a Marketing-Communications Consultant. I use my Mac for
business, mostly Word Processing, although more and more Powerpoint, Excel
and design (quark, photoshop, a little Illustrator), which is why I'm
looking for an upgrade.
----------
When you introduce graphics apps into the mix you increase the value of a G4.
My wife is starting a photography business and is using digital
photography more, so I'm going to keep this Biege for her, or as a second/backup. I intend to add a G5 (or maybe a maxxed-out Mini) simply to begin migrating into X, its capabilities and software.
----------
The more your wife expects to use the Beige for photo stuff, the more you're going to want a G4 processor in it. Otherwise, she's likely to start looking longingly, even jealously, at your G5. Keep peace in the household and install the fastest G4 you can find/afford.
Now I'm stepping into the proverbial can of worms. I am confused as to the difference between the following items for my Biege
Powerlogix's G3/1GHz ZIF (http://eshop.macsales.com/item/PowerLogix/PFZGX10001G/)
----------
Great product, but pass it up and go for a G4, for reasons stated above.
I'd recommend at least taking a look at Daystar's XLR8 ZIFs (400 to 600 MHz), priced from $119 to $199.

No need to mess with motherboard jumpers - just choose the speed/price you want, install it and get to work.
FastMac's G4's are probably very comparable.
Is one route better than the other (staying G3 or going G4)? Can I, just
by plugging in a ZIF, change my G3 to a G4 and why would I want to do that?
----------
G4 is the way to go, for two immediate reasons and one future consideration:
1) Photoshop and other digital image processing apps fly on a G4;
2) OS X is optimized for the G4;
3) OS X is rapidly leaving the G3 behind, and the G4 will soon be the minimum supported processor.
