I'm new to this list, so please bear with me.
I just bought a G3 400 mHz r2 B&W Powermac (which has not arrived yet)
Just got my first one a week ago, so I'm right there with ya.
What are the options I have for installing hard drives on this
machine? Will I need anything in particular to make modern, larger
hard drives work with it?
This machine won't work with internal drives larger than 128MB *unless* you
install a bit of software from Speedtools - it's $15, and lets you use drives of
any size. However, you also need to put such drives on the 2nd IDE port, which
means slaving it with your CD/DVD and punting the Zip drive. And you can still
put a pair of 120s on the other port. Or go with the already suggested PCI IDE card.
I got the software and put a 200GB drive in which works just perfectly. Well
worth the money.
What video cards are excellent choices for upgrade in particular? What
kind of card does it use: PCI of AGP?
As already noted, PCI. The Radeon 7000 Mac Edition is about $40-50 and works
nicely, or you can go for the more expensive 9200. Make sure to buy the 'mac
edition' version!
