I'm looking to replace my current setup (Pentium 2 running Win98SE),
with something that requires less work to keep running. It seems I'm
always having to replace the CPU fan or PS or something else in this
system. Of course it runs 24-7, so that is part of the reason, but I
want to eliminate the things that give me the most problems, plus
provide a little more security against data loss. Other than a UPS to
keep the system going should a power loss occur, I don't really have
any backup for the 4 large 50 Gb SCSI Seagate HD's. So far I've been
lucky, but that can't last forever. One of the reasons I chose this
system in the first place was because it works with most any other
system I hook up to my network, Mac, Linux, BeOS, they all recognize
Windows.
Now for the new fileserver, I want to go fanless on the CPU, so the two
I'm thinking about is a beige G3 or a Pentium on an Intel board. My
current system only has 64 Mb of RAM and performs fine, so I'm looking
to keep the requirements low. It will allow playback of MP3's and
handle all of my file swapping needs, so the new system must do the
same. The new wrinkle I will add is the addition of a 200-250 Gb IDE
drive to serve as a backup for the SCSI drives. I may reverse this and
have the SCSI drives backup the IDE, will depend on several different
things. To accomplish this I will need some software that will do a
daily backup of the new files to the backup drive(s).
And finally to my questions, I know the on-board IDE is limited on the
beige, but I have an AHARD 66 PCI card I could use for the big IDE
drive. Will this card take that large of a drive? Will 10.2.6 allow
the ease of file sharing I will require from various other platforms
and OS'es? What backup software is available to meet these
requirements? Will it be fast enough to serve up MP3 files? I ask
this because I experienced some problems when I originally setup a
Linux (Samba) system to perform this task. These large SCSI drives are
68 pin, but I have them hooked to an internal card with a 50 pin cable,
so I don't foresee any problem hooking them up to the Mac. Will they
require a reformat or will the Mac recognize the FAT 32 drives okay?
BTW, these drives are currently housed in the server case along with
the system that is running the whole thing, but I have individual cases
and external cables I would use with the beige DT that I want to use.
Guess that's about it, any and all comments welcome, but please respect
the list and send any lengthy replies directly to me. Thanks!
