The weirdest part of an already weird situation was reading in the morning paper Job's admission that "OSX has been leading a double life for the past five years".. Ok. An insurance policy - but against who or what? And who financed five years' worth of shadow development?
OK, so maybe the have a 'covert ops' department, an Apple SkunkWorks. Maybe they're called 'the bad apples' or 'the rotten apples' or something. LOL.
Its just forward-thinking, plain and simple. No one can predict the future of this industry, for more than 2-5 years probably, definitely not 10. Just proves it wasn't some snap decision. They actually had a 'plan b'.
If Apple wasn't this forward-thinking, they probably would have fallen by the wayside long ago. Like someone else said, 5 years from now we'll look back and wonder what all the fuss was about.
Now, if they had announced that they were merging with Microsoft, then we'd have something to get excited about (in a bad way). This is just progress. It will all work out and we'll have an even better computing experience because of it. Just give it time. We're all diehard mac fans for a reason, because we like what they do, and they do it well, period.
