Ah ha, you have substitution parts!
A friend dropped his by, also a nice B&W. Unfortunately, his
doesn't work, and he thought I might be able to figure out what's
wrong.
Well, nothing much happens. The fan turns on at start-up, but no
chime, and no flicker on screen.
I put another video card in: nothing.
I changed ATA hard drives: nothing.
The fan works, it's running, so does this mean it is NOT the power supply?
Not necessarily. Does the HD spin up when you turn on the power?
If not, likely the clip shorted out a PS line. That would explain a
lot of things.
When I opened it up, by the way, the clip holding the heat sink
over the zif was off. I took the whole heat sink off, and tried the
computer. Then, when replacing the hard drive, I found the heat
sink clip, underneath everything. I reinstalled the heat sink.
Could this have done damage?
Yes, more than likely the culprit.
Lots of questions, I know. Bottom line: I'd be interested in
getting this repaired for my friend without spending a lot of money.
Any ideas? Hints? Suggestions?
(Oh, one more thing: it has what looks like a CD-ROM in it, but the
plastic cover

I think I would try swapping the PS first and see if that gets it
working. If nothing changes, then I would put the original PS back
in and start looking for another motherboard. You could swap in
yours to see if his PS is good. If it doesn't start up then you can
look for another PS while you are at it.
My guess would be that the processor is cooked from having no heat
sink attached. Try his processor in your B&W and see if it's alive.
If you're daring enough, you might try yours in his machine. Chances
are it'll work.
