I've done some more googling in the last ten minutes and found two suppliers in the States that make CDRW units for the tray iMacs. Pretty expensive though (cheapest is $115 US), but I've asked them for freight costs if they'll post to Oz.

No problems Santa. I have a stack of trayloader CD drives that won't read. The trayloaders they came out of, came from a High School where the delightful students would take their protractor or similar and flick the LED out or do other damage that made them unusable. The slotloaders don't quite suffer from that problem although I have got one at the moment that won't read a CD!
