I have to weigh in on this. AAPL is more, a system integrator. They've seduced, and succeed, because Mac is cool to use. Ironically, they have to build their own boxes to ensure quality.
Absurdly, they're able to price their inefficiencies up (small quantity, non standard parts are more expensive) but at the cost of meaningful market share. But in the end, AAPL controls experience quality by way of their own hardware (and of course the OS). What proportion of non-optimized systems could Apple afford to have running around "out there?" When you consider the Babel of chips and chip sets, mobos, even power supplies, packaging and interfaces - the list goes on - on the hardware end, with every vendor striving to differentiate and cut cost, how consistently could experience quality be regulated? You say that the PC makers seem to do it. But do you buy a PC? You say that Microsoft does it. OK. Then why does the world need Apple? Apple's role is, must be, optimizer. Bring on new chips - let's see if Apple, and the devices, are up to the task. Bring on all boxes? I don't think so. The bar is higher than Dell + Windows. But, rave on.
